HONG, SUNG CHUL 9.5 ~ 21, 2007 Gallery IHN is pleased to announce Hong, Sung Chul¡¯s first solo exhibition previewing Wednesday 5th September. For this exhibition, he utilizes LCD Unit extracted from solar electric cell and elastic string works that are printed on by photography presenting images of three-dimensional body works. In the String_Hand series, Hong, Sung Chul employs an image of a partial or whole body itself, left in a photography printed on strings and the plane configuration changes into three dimensional works. The two images or above are layered and mixed which makes the viewer seems that it is moving with an illusion effect. The Perceptual Mirror_Blinker artworks reiterate abstract images by flickering LCD units, which are small as a finger. As a result, it shows the vital energetic flow at once, which the images interfere one with the other, giving rise to other new ones and challenging the capacity of the human mind to recognize objects. He uses media arts as a medium of approaching the origin of art and the nature of living through digitalized images and analogical material, creating a sensation of optical illusion, stimulating the mind of the modern spectator and exploring the sensibility of the analogical world. The artwork in whole is formed of strings. The string itself includes the concept that a one-picture element is formed in creating an image. Because the photography is printed on the systematic arranged strings, it looks like it forms a pixel aggregate. These small unit sets are arranged of front and rear left and right that are formed within layers. Each of the layers is printed with the image of hands, and depending on the viewer¡¯s angle, the space inside is filled with density or emptiness. The viewer continuously interacts with the artworks depending on the angle they confront with. Above all, that his work brings in an interactive effect, the focus is to capture the shape inside the fade image that subsist in orderly with incompleteness. We could discover the symbolic correlation between anxiety and retroaction. The continuous series of his Perceptual Mirror_Blinker works applies the digital medium of a used longevity pixel, in other words, a thrown ¡®inferior pixel¡¯s which shows the vital power of energy current. The small LCD units are connected with a solar device, which reiterates flickering reaction throughout solar energy. When the environment is dark, the LCD units move slowly and on the other hand, when it is bright, it moves with vigorous action. His works initiates from solar energy which remains as an artwork, that is interacting with nature and moreover, to connect a relationship with a completely different dimensional space.
