Hwang, Ji-Seon My works in 'Sketch for My Mother-land' start from the games such as cat's cradle, sabangchigu(Korean hopscotch)i, dice, top spinning, and kawibawibo(scissors, rock.paper) that we used to play as a child. The theme 'game' appears in my work from the time when I was studying abroad in School of Visual Arts. My American colleagues who saw my work on sabangchigui (Korean hopscotch) told me that they also used to play a similar game called hopscotch when they were little. Maybe it was then that I saw the possibility of communication in 'game'. In this exhibition, I tried to express my opinion on the reality we are faced with through the objects such as chair and old map (Daedongyeojido : Map of Korea(from middle of east to west), Chunjido : Map of universe, Susunchongdo : Map of capital Seoul), which have been the objects of my interest for quite some time. I noticed rivalry and hierarchy that we see everywhere in seemingly merry childhood game and this is why I chose this theme to reflect the reality of life in my mother-land that I live in. Working with urethane was a challenge, but its delicacy and the subtle light of mother-of-pearl transformed the abstract notion in my head into an object with the concrete form.
