Throughout her artistic career, Ahn, Jong Yuen has presented various genres of artwork to the public. She began as a painter, and once accomplished to her satisfaction in this area, crossed over into sculpture where she has explored the myriad processes and variations of three dimensional art in wood, crystal, aluminum, and now, stainless black mirrors. The pervading theme with most of her work is Water and Light: flowing water, still water, water permeated by light, water reflected by light. Hence the vast number of dots and dashes carved into the stainless black mirrors are not just landscapes but a flow of energy, depicting her inner notions of the dark side of the world and the light of hope. This exhibition marks what appears to be a return to a one-dimensional plane but closer examination reveals the manner of presentation is not so much a picture but more a sculpture. Her renewed inquiry into the origin of life in water is through intaglio and marquetry on aluminum plates and stainless black mirrors. Art critic Kang Sun-Hak has noted when Ahn, Joen Yung moves a burr-drill over a stainless mirror, inner elements of the scenery outside of the mirror reflected onto the mirror begin to emerge. The artist's attitude considers not only the world present in her work but also the world that is reflected by others. The viewer is reminded of these two different and often contradictory worlds in this exhibition.
