Kang Jin-Sik August 23 - August 31, 2000 Gallery Ihn is pleased to present the recent works of Kang Jin-Sik. Since the early 1990s, he had sculpted three dimensional objects with which he examines different aspects of light. For this exhibition, "From Object to Illusion", Kang moves his three dimensional works, with insistent reflective surfaces, move into a two dimensional plane resembling painting. Kang Jin-Sik's "plae sculpture" consists of many small-cut facets of colourful acrylic that stick to one another. These facets become more voluminous and reflective than an entire plate as they explore the complex relationship between internal and external light. The elegant harmony of colours on the surface further distinguishes the works and is the result of a subtle process, using a variety of acrylic facet. Having Achieved a delicate surface of various tones and textures in this way, Kang has easily manipulated the character of the material and even multiplied its light. Kang Jin-Sik is struggling to create a new language of the plastic art. While preparing this exhibition, he seems to have found a new style. Like a matrix of digital code, the acrylic facets seem to continually multiply and transform all by themselves. Kang Jin-Sik studied sculpture at the College of Fine Arts in Seoul National University and holds a degree from the Graduated School of Fine Arts at the University of Oregon. He has held many solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions locally since 1990. He currently lectures at Korea University and Dong-Kuk University in Seoul.
