Stars, the Earth, & People

June 6 - June 23, 2000

Gallery Ihn is pleased to present the recent works by An Jong-Yuen, who has been working through different aspects of light - projection, reflection, and refraction - in interior as well as exterior space.

For this exhibition, Ahn has chosen the crystal ball as her theme; the different sizes and colors of these spheres are diffused on white sand, and each piece has its own particular light as if it is telling us its own story. These clear objects become an abstract subject which allow the viewer to visualize the inner world of the artist, and when assembled these spheres further create an atmosphere reminiscent of the outer world of the Cosmos. Following a physical language of lights, Ahn creates a unique experience, which is defined by her sense and institution for spacial accuracy and perfect harmony.

Since the 19th century, the movements of light has been an important theme in Art history, such as in Impressionism and Op-Art; however, she considers light not only as a theme but also as a substance of the work.

The works of Ahn Jong-Yuen may remind viewers of their childhood, since a child one might imagine the Cosmos through air pockets in a slice of bread, reflecting the sun light. Ahn's work may give us a chance to remember such childhood images.

Born in 1952 in Pusan, Ahn Jong-Yuen studied painting at Dong-A University in Pusan. In 1989, she relocated to New York City where she completed both her B.F.A. and M.F.A. course work at School of Visual Arts. Since 1981, she has held several solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad. Ahn also participated in 'the spirit of young artists' of KwangJu Biennial in 1997 in Korea.
